This piece was an interesting start to a style I am enjoying at the moment.

I am often asked what my process/preparation for a piece is.

Once I have an idea for a painting, I spend time researching the suitable model or expression to express my feelings or tell the story, this could be found in many forms from live models, photographs or observational sketches.

I then play digitally with them, on my computer which often becomes my sketchbook. This is also the time I like to experiment with paint techniques, as many of you know I love mixed media and often don’t follow any rules with materials.

Once I feel I have an understanding of the piece, I then take the work to canvas or board. While working on a painting, I often change direction and welcome happy accidents that regularly occur in the process.

This painting depicts the struggles most women go through at some point in their lives. The celebration of female empowerment, of choosing to love ourselves first.

The strength to stand forward and project our own sense of self-worth and confidence. To emerge into a new life with colourful wings like a butterfly from its cocoon. To fly.
